The Whaling Wall in Anchorage is one of over 100 whaling wall murals around the world painted by famed outdoor muralist Robert Wyland. It pays tribute to the whales and fur seals seen traveling throughout the waters of Alaska in the Pacific Ocean.
The depiction of the underwater mammals swimming past the Alaskan icebergs was dedicated in 1994 and spans the west wall of J.C. Penny’s measuring five stories tall and 400 feet wide. Hundreds of whales typically migrate to Alaska each year and can be seen between May and September. They include the Grey, Beluga, Humpback, and Orca whales. The Whaling Wall will remind you to be on the lookout in the waters of the Pacific Ocean for the genuine water-spouting giants that rarely cease to amaze those who are lucky enough to spot them.
