Tourist Guide Fairbanks
Fairbanks, known as ‘The Golden Heart of Alaska’, is the second largest city in Alaska. Situated in the Tanana Valley, where the Chena River meets the Tanana River, it covers an area of 84.6 sq km. It has a population of 31,000.
Fairbanks experiences some of the most extreme weather in the world. Winter is usually long and cold with temperatures falling to as low as –28°C. In summer, the climate gets quite warm. It also witnesses rapid temperature swings along with hail and snow. During the winter, ice fog is a regular phenomenon. Travelling in winter can be quite tiresome.
The city offers recreational activities like hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, and cross-country skiing. One can also witness the celestial phenomenon of ‘Northern Lights’ in the vicinity.
Fairbanks started developing after the discovery of gold in the region. Its gold mining heritage is visible in the University of Alaska Museum and the Alaskaland Pioneer Park.Explore map
