The Totem heritage center was established in the year 1976 with a purpose to preserve the endangered 19th century totem poles recovered from uninhabited sites of Tlingit and Haida village near Ketchikan. The magnificent poles are exhibited at the center in conjunction with other totems and native Alaskan artifacts. The museum organizes a nationally recognized program of native art classes and other activities to promote and preserve the native Alaskan arts and crafts.
