Sitka: Attractions and more...
Alaska Raptor Center
Alaska Raptor Center executes the task of providing medical treatment to around 100 to 200 injured birds; bald eagles in particular. Its objective is to have its patients released in to the ‘wild’. Certain species, however, get injured to such an extent that they can’t survive in wild in spite of rehabilitation. They might join ‘Raptors-in-residence’; thereby having provided education and excitement to around 36000 yearly visitors.
St. Lazaria Island
This 65-acre volcanic island; which lies at the distance of 15 miles on the south-western side of Sitka had been made wildlife refuge in the year 1909 to house around half million sea-birds which breed over here. There is an availability of boat charters which help in having viewed several bird species; inclusive of murres, puffins, storm petrels, eagles, and rhinoceros auklets.
