Located in a glaciated valley at the north end of the Lynn Canal in Alaska, USA, the port city of Skagway is considered to be the northernmost point in Southeast Alaska. It sits amidst the St Elias Mountains and is spread across an area of 1,202.7 sq km.
Once the gateway to the Klondike gold fields of Canada, it has been described as United States’ best preserved gold rush town. Tourism is the major contributor to this town with a population of just over 800.
The temperature in Skagway during summer ranges from 18°C to 25° C while the winter temperature ranges from –2°C to –8°C. Known as the home of the North Wind; it experiences strong winds and very little rain.
Home to the oldest operating narrow gauge railroad system in the United States—the White Pass and Yukon Route—it is also famous for the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park.
