Sunset Crater was formed due to volcanic eruptions during the twelfth century and is basically a cinder cone. The Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument was established on 26 May 1930.
Tourists should collect information from the visitor centre and then move on to one of the trails for hiking, like the Lava Flow Trail and the Lenox Crater Trail. The Bonito Campground is the best area for camping. The landscape is diverse and beautiful with deserts, hills, wildflowers and aspen trees. The region is prone to sudden weather changes so precautions should be taken when coming to the park.
