The tubes, craters and cinder cones in here were formed by volcanic eruptions from the Medicine lake volcano. The aboriginals of this region were the Madoc Indians who were later removed from the area by the US Army. This site was declared a national monument on 21 November 1925.
A variety of plants like the desert sweet, the aromatic desert and ferns flourish on these lava beds enhancing the beauty of this region. Visitors will also be amazed to see the diversity of animals such as squirrels, kangaroo rats and sage grouse. One of the interesting things to do at the Lava Beds National Monument is to explore the countless lava tubes that feel like a different world altogether.
This region is vulnerable to extremes of temperatures that ranges anywhere between 101°C to –28°C. |
