Colorado: Attractions in Colorado

The residents of Colorado are known as ‘Coloradans’. The region was inhabited by natives (primarily the Anasazi and Pueblo tribes) for thousands of years. Present day Colorado has a large proportion of Hispanos (who are descendants of settlers having a colonial Spanish origin). There are a sizeable number of German-ancestry people living in the state.

Visit the Mesa Verde National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) which is home to a preserved Native American city containing many ancient ruins of cliff dwellings and palaces. The Red Rocks Park has an impressive natural amphitheatre carved into the rock. At Colorado Springs, one can find amazing rock formations in the desert along with interesting museums. The dome of the Colorado State Capitol building is covered with 24-carat gold and dominates the skyline of Denver. Experience the glory of steam trains (and even climb up one yourself) at the Durango and Silverton Railyard Museum.

The state knows how to celebrate its status as the ‘Archaeological centre of America’. The Mesa Verde Country Indian Arts & Culture Festival held in May honours the ancestral Pueblo people. The Denver International Wine Festival represents over 15 countries and offers a unique wine-tasting experience, while a trip to the Aspen Music Festival (held between June and August) is a must when in the region.
