The marvellous landscape of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park has been formed by the gradual action of water on the hard Proterozoic crystalline rock. The South Rim Road, North Rim Road and East Portal Road prove to be excellent scenic drives. It is also a great site for wildlife watching mainly for animals like the yellowed-bellied marmot, golden-mantled ground squirrels and least and Colorado chipmunks.

The Black Canyon is a great place for adventure lovers. The myriad options include camping, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, rafting and so on. The Colorado National Monument, Curecanti National Recreation Area and Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve are some of the major attractions nearby.
