Connecticut Places and Attractions

The residents of Connecticut are called ‘Yankees’ or sometimes ‘Nutmeggers’. It is the richest state in the USA and is the birthplace of George W. Bush (the country’s 43rd president). Connecticut has a large number of Italian-Americans, although African-Americans and Hispanics (including Puerto Ricans) are sizeable in number in the urban areas.

In the city of Hartford, one can find the Wadsworth Atheneum, a castle-like building with a delightful sculpture garden and fine paintings. The Mystic Seaport (in the quiet eastern town of Mystic) is a living museum housing a village, nineteenth century ships and exhibits on New England life. The Center Church at New Haven has an underground crypt with tombstones dating back to the year 1687, while the Barnum Museum at Bridgeport attracts circus fans from around the country.

Take a trip back to medieval times by participating in the Connecticut Renaissance Fair (mid-September to October) which features a medieval marketplace and actual live combat with full-contact jousting. Celebrate the harvest season at Southington’s Annual Apple Harvest Festival held in late September. Other festivals include Goshen’s Litchfield Jazz Festival in August, the Annual Durham Fair in September and the Hartford International Jazz Festival in October.
