| Attractions and things to do |
This area was first spotted by Ponce de Leon in 1513. Dry Tortugas National Park is a protected area housing Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas. It comprises seven small islands, a coral reef and woods with a variety of plant and animal life. Fort Jefferson is the centre of attraction at this site. Its construction began in 1846, but it was never completed. This fort has witnessed several historical events in the past, for instance, the American-Spanish War. The fort, in the midst of the ocean, is a marvellous sight to view.
The groups of island that make up the Tortugas are also worth visiting. These are rich in scenic beauty and offer numerous options for water sports. Loggerhead Key is the largest of these islands and is known for its beach which is great for snorkelling.
