Fort Carolina National Memorial marks the site of the first French settlement in America in 1564. It was declared a National Memorial on 21 September 1950.
This place is excellent for a complete holiday. The Ribault Monument provides an excellent view of the Saint Johns River, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mayport Naval Station. This site is also important from historical point of view as it was here that the French explorer Jean Ribault first alighted. The Spanish Pond is another great tourist attraction which provides quiet walkways through the oak hammock trees, forests, mangroves and the marshlands. The Theodore Roosevelt Area is a beautiful area spread over 600 acres of land housing hardwood forests, wetlands and scrub vegetation.
