The Gulf of Islands National Seashore was established on 8 January 1971; it boasts of world class scenic beauty with its barrier islands, great beaches and bays, mangroves and marshlands. This area houses a variety of marine life and thus attracts tourists from the world over.
The main islands that are worth visiting are the Santa Rosa Island, Perdido Key, Petit Bois Island, Horn Island, East Ship Island, West Ship Island and Cat Island. There are six forts in this region that should be visited. These are Fort Barrancas, Fort Pickens, Advanced Redoubt, Batteries, Fort Massachusetts and Fort McRee.
The island offers plenty of outdoor entertainment like hiking, kayaking, canoeing and camping. These islands also have some great picnic spots.
