Established in 2000 to interpret the customary Hawaiian culture and geology of the region, the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail is managed by the National Park Service and is a designated national historic trail.
The cultural and historical resources along the trail include various temples, royal centres, fishing sites, fish ponds and other sacred places. Apart from that, the trail also boasts of exceptional flora and fauna in the form of reefs, ecosystems, coastal vegetation, anchialine ponds, exotic birds and sea turtle habitats.
Although the trail is still under development, the temples and shrines found along it are worth a visit. Nature lovers can also revel in the exotic and endangered species of plants and animals found here. |
