Located on the Hawaiian island of Molokai, the Kalaupapa National Historical Park was established in 1980 by the National Park Service with the main aim of preserving the cultural and physical background of the leper colonies on the island. It was once the site of total isolation for victims of Hanen’s Disease.
Located in the park are the historic settlements of Kalaupapa and Kalawo. While Kalaupapa is still home to the descendants of the earlier settlements, Kalawo has the Church of Siloama and the Church of Saint Philomena.
Apart from that, the park houses a volcanic crater, a rain forest, lava tubes and a Molokai lighthouse. Visitors can also undertake a commercial tour of the park with all its scenic views, cliffs and islands. |
