Found in 1978, the Kaloko-Honokohau was established for the preservation and interpretation of the traditional culture of Hawaii. Before the Europeans captured the area, it was the site of Hawaiian settlements. This cultural and historic site consists of coastal areas, large fish ponds, religious sites, archaeological relics, stone slides and petroglyphs.
The Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park is also an important wetland area which protects native birds which include the koloa, ala-eke-oke-o, aeo and au-ku-u.
Visitors can also experience the recreational activities of hiking, picnicking, fishing, snorkelling, swimming, wildlife viewing, kayaking, surfing and bird watching to make their trip memorable. |
