Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Poverty Point is a designated national monument. In earlier times, the monument was a major trade centre and its nearby area supported a permanent population.
Known all over the world for its archaeological importance, this site represents the ancient culture through some of the largest prehistoric earthworks.
The site has a host of facilities for the visitors in the form of a museum which offers visual presentations and various artefacts, a theatre, an observation tower, a tram trail, hiking trails, guided tours and much more. Interpretive programmes on the archaeological excavations are also held here. |
