The state was a frontrunner in the American Civil Rights Movement. A majority of the population are African Americans, especially in the north-western, central and south-western regions. Mississippi has produced imminent celebrities like Elvis Presley and Oprah Winfrey. Bands like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles have also been influenced by the famed Mississippi Blues.

Mississippi has many historic landmarks such as the Federal-style Rosalie Mansion, the Old Mississippi State Capitol and the Okolona Historic District.
