Established in 1929, only about one acre of the historic battlefield remains preserved and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It features various memorials dedicated to the heroes of the war and holds the distinction of being the only National Battlefield Site in the United States National Park System.

The Bethany Presbyterian Church and Bethany Cemetery are the most visited sites in this area. The cemetery contains the graves of over a hundred soldiers and the ancient families of this region.

The Visitors Centre features an interesting collection of artefacts, visual presentations, photographs and artwork related to the Civil War. It is an excellent place to learn about the history of the area, with guided trails also being available.
