Earlier a part of the Agate Springs Ranch, this national monument is managed by the National Park Service and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site contains various well-preserved fossil beds with them being the best samples of Miocene mammals like Miohippus and Menoceras.
Fashioned to preserve the rich fossil deposits and the natural ecosystem, the place houses various mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds as well as lush vegetation in the form of native grasses and shrubs.
The hiking trails of Fossil Hills and the Daemonelix reveal the abundant wildlife which has over a hundred species of exotic birds. The James Cook Gallery and the museum of the region which has over 500 artefacts are other interesting sites to visit. |
