South Dakota: Introduction and History

South Dakota has a total area of 199,905 sq km. Its capital is Pierre and the population is approximately 754,800.

Located on the Frontier Strip in USA, South Dakota is surrounded by North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wyoming and Montana. Through the central part of the state runs the Missouri River. The state has four major regions—the Drift Prairie, the Dissected Till Plains, the Great Plains and the Black Hills.

German-Americans form the majority of the population in the state of South Dakota. The agricultural industry is the basis of the culture and the economy, though tourism is rapidly gaining significance in the state’s economy.
