Dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, who was the third president of the United States, the memorial was completed in 1943 and occupied one of the last significant sites in the city. Built in the neoclassical style, the building was designed by John Russell Pope.
One of the most picturesque landmarks of the city, it is an elegant circular white marble monument with stunning porticoes, Ionic columns and a beautiful dome. At the centre of the memorial stands a towering bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson as well as inscriptions of Jefferson’s writing.
The memorial is a part of the National Park Service which has over 300 parks, perfect examples of the natural and cultural richness of the region. There are various bookstores and gift shops in the memorial’s vicinity.
