Located in the Cochise County, the city was established in the year 1880, during the time of Southern Pacific Railroad.

The city was named after the Judge William Benson, who was a dear friend of the President of the railroad. The city has a total area of 35.7 square miles, all of which consists of land.

The city has a population of 4,711 people, and a total of 1,346 families are residing in the city.

The place receives lesser rainfall and also has a hot and humid weather. A small amount of snow-fall occurs during the winter.  

The city has an Airport located at a distance of around 3 miles towards the North West direction.

There is a World University located in Benson. The city is best known for its gateway to Kartchner Caverns State Park.
