Canyon de Chelly is a perfect example of natural-distinctive architecture, artifacts, and rock imagery and exhibits extraordinary preservation integrity. Located in northeastern Arizona, Canyon de Chelly or the Canyon de Chelly National Monument was established in 1931. It is located along the border of the Navajo Nation and still maintains a living community of Navajo people and the Ancient Pueblo People. It is unique among National Park service units, as it is comprised entirely of Navajo Tribal Trust Land that remains home to the canyon community. The site expands 131 square miles and occupies the floors and rims of de Chelly, del Muerto, and Monument.
