The city of El Dorado is about 100 miles away from Little Rock but this place is popularly known as “Arkansas’s Original
Boomtown.” Founded in 1843 when a retail shop was built in the area and after a
few years it became a center for numerous cotton farms and plantations.
This small town was
quite secluded till the railroads were built helping the lumber industry to
evolve. The meaning of the name “El
Dorado” is the gold in Spanish and the city lived up
to the name when the city discovered oil in the western part of the city 1921.
Gradually it lead to spurt in population which in turn resulted in
architectural boom which can still be witnessed if the visitors walk down the
downtown.
El Dorado also hosts a
number of cultural events which include “Showdown at Sunset”, May haw Festival,
a Fantastic Fourth Celebration, SouthArk Outdoor Expo and many others. Many
outdoor activities can be enjoyed in the Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge,
the SouthArkansasArboretumState
Park and MoroBayState Park.
