Bethel is home to the Kuskokwim 300 Dog Race (locally called the K300) which is considered as the world’s greatest dog-sled race. The K300 along with other smaller races like Bogus Creek 150 and Akiak Dash usually take place in January.
If one visits in the last week of March, it is likely that one will be welcomed with a traditional Alaskan dance at the Cam-ai Dance Festival. The Mink and Fox Festival and the Yup’ik Eskimo Dance Festival are also equally frequented.
Experience the culture of the city at the Yup’iit Piciryarait Cultural Center which has a museum and library combined with a gift shop that specializes in native Alaskan artwork. The Yugtarvik Museum and Cultural Center has interesting exhibits on the natives of the land.
Kayaking, skiing and caribou hunting can be enjoyed in your spare time. A trip to a traditional Yup’ik fish camp could reward you with a freshly smoked salmon treat.
