In 1958, the Camaldolese established New Camaldoli Heritage in Big Sur. The Camaldese Benedictine monks trace their old heritage to the 6th century monastic traditions of St. Benedict, as told by their 11th century founder, St. Romuald. It is believed that the Hermitage at Camaldoli was founded in 1027 in Italy and served as the motherhouse of the order.
