Downey city lies in Los Angeles County of California State in the United States. The city was founded in the 1800s, by John Gately Downey who was the governor of the state of California and bears his name.
During the early years the city was economically unstable. After more than a century, the city was officially founded in the year 1956. It spreads over an area of 12.6 square miles. Downey is densely populated with 8,641 people per sq. mile. As per the 2000 census, the city's population is 107,323 residents.
Downey is surrounded by several cities. South Gate city on the west, Bell Gardens lies to the northwest, Norwalk and Santa Fe Springs on the east and Bellflower and Paramount cities lie on the southern side of Downey.
It experiences a typical Californian Mediterranean climate with dry, hot summers while the winters are cool and humid.
