In 1806, the US President Jefferson authorized the national road as a way to connect the eastern and western part of the state. Construction of the road began in 1811; it used to stretch from Cumberland, Maryland and end at Vandalia, Illinois. The road was revamped and is now well known as the US route 40. It is a completely federally funded road; it is covered by beautiful trees on both sides of the road and now it covers a smooth run from New Jersey to California in the west.
