It has the largest Toyota dealership in the world. The meaning of the word El Monte is a marsh, meadow or wooded place and has been credited with being the birthplace of a number of TV shows.
The city has developed into a feasible manufacturing and commercial base and is now focusing its growth in the residential and retail sectors. The city experiences warm summers and cool winters with August being the warmest month and December the coldest.
Winters are more humid than the summers and February is the wettest month of the year.
