Eureka’ s livelihood and founding was and still remains quite connected to the Pacific Ocean, Humboldt Bay, and related industries, especially to fishing industries. Salmon fisheries sprang along the Eel River in early 1851 and by seven years it had 2,000 barrels of cured fish and 50,000 pounds of smoked salmon, processed and shipped out of Humboldt Bay in an annual basis.
