Mono Lake is an oasis in the dry Great Basin situated in the spectacular east Sierra of California. It’s a vital habitat for millions of migratory and nestling birds. The lake is an alkaline and hyper saline lake having an unusual productive ecosystem. It is believed that this lake was formed at least 760,000 years ago and dates back to the Long Valley eruption. The oldest lakes in North America, it is a terminal lake in a watershed which is fed by melting runoff having no outlet to the ocean. Thus, dissolved salts in the runoff remain in the Lake Raise the water’s pH levels and salt concentration. The Mono Lake Committee operates its offices out of the Mono Lake Committee information center and bookstore.
