In Los Angeles—the City of Angeles—what more fitting name for a church is there than Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels?
Located at 555 West Temple Street this Roman Catholic Church is also referred to as the Los Angeles Cathedral, and is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. As such, it serves over 4 million Catholics across 287 Parish. Only about 9 years all, this house of worship is architecturally postmodern and features many acute and obtuse angles in its design, which doesn’t exactly align with tradition Roman Catholic churches that may initially come to mind. The building is notably lacking in right angles, and upon first glance, it might not even appear to be a church at all by passersby.
The grounds occupy a total of 5.6 acres, across which you’ll find not only the church, but a mausoleum, gift shop, cafeteria, conference center and clergy residences. Altogether, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels creates a Catholic community of worship where all are welcome; in fact, they offer masses in a remarkable 42 different languages. Although the church is relatively young, having to replace the Cathedral of Saint Vibiana after its severe earthquake damage in 1994, it has rapidly become a welcome and flourishing addition to the Catholic Church and has been a shining leader for the Los Angeles Catholic community.
