The Los Angeles City Hall is not just the building that homes the city’s governing offices, but a structural icon of the city’s identity. Located at 200 North Spring Street, the LA City Hall houses the mayor’s office as well as the City Council meeting chambers and offices. The towering white building was designed by John Parkinson, John Austin and Albert Martin and creates a beautiful stark contrast against the clear, blue LA sky. Dating back to 1928 and rising an impressive 32 floors at 454 feet in the air, this City Hall is the tallest base-isolated structure in the world, which is a design element intended for earthquake damage prevention. It shares the skyline with few buildings in downtown Los Angeles; as such, it has a free observation deck on the 27th floor that is open to the public, which provides a spectacular panoramic view of scenic Los Angeles.
Not only is the building completely unique in design, but it is recognizable from a slew of famous Hollywood movies, such as Adventures of Superman, Tower of Terror, War of the Worlds and the show Alias. Walking past the Los Angeles City Hall can be like walking through a scene one of your favorite films or shows. The beautiful building adds an element of character to the already scenic city of Los Angeles and a visit here provides a sense a historic perspective into this city’s identity.
