The Los Angeles Times is among the most renowned news dailies in the country, with an impressive readership of over one million people. Almost as interesting as a newspaper with such a wide readership is the headquarters where it is produced and distributed. The LA Times headquarters is located on the periphery of downtown Los Angeles at 202 West 1st Street in a grand white building. Opened in 1935, this building was designed by Gordon Kaufmann, who also designed part of the Hoover Dam and allowed for the Times Building to win an award for its Modern architectural style in 1937.

The building is such an architectural and historical wonder that visitors are offered free tours of the plant. Among the many highlights of the building is the remarkable Globe Lobby, which boasts 10-foot murals by Hugo Ballin. It also features a historical exhibit that chronicles the first 100 years of the LA Times’ life. Tours are only given twice a month, so reservations are necessary in order to ensure a spot. As the Los Angeles Time is such an integral part of the city’s culture, delving into the epicenter of it all would make for an interesting educational experience. Call (213) 237-5757 for information.
