In a city as diverse as Los Angeles, the Japanese American National Museum is a remarkable forum for cultural celebration and exploration. There is a very rich Japanese history in the United States, and the Japanese American National Museum serves to chronicle these moments in history so visitors and future generations better understand this legacy. Located at 369 East First Street, this is the largest museum in the country dedicated to Americans of Japanese descent. The exterior of the building is a true spectacle in itself, with its impressive and contemporary architecture that beckons you inside to experience the decades of history within.
The museum relays a number of accounts, photos and models regarding Japanese-Americans placed in internment camps during World War II, which is a vast part of this culture’s history. While this part of the museum can be a heartbreaking exhibit, the museum also serves to inspire, with exhibitions eliciting feeling of hope and overcoming. Visitors will leave the museum with a better understanding of past injustices and a brighter vision for the Japanese-American future. If you are of Japanese-American ancestry, this is an intimate way to get in touch with your roots; if not, it’s an extraordinary educational experience. For more information, call 213-625-1770.
