The Southwest Museum of the American Indian, usually located at 234 Museum Drive in Los Angeles, California, is currently closed to the public due to ongoing conservation of the collection.
The conservation project of Los Angeles’s oldest museum, which opened in 1907, is scheduled to be completed in 2013. However, the exhibition is worth keeping in the back of your mind until its reopening; the museum has collections dating well into the 19th century. Sitting atop a breathtaking hillside, the rustic museum chronicles the history of the Native American people who roamed the lands of Southern California.
The exhibits feature various textiles, pottery, baskets, beaded clothing and ethnographic objects. Much of this delicate merchandise from the Southwest Museum has been relocated to the Autry Store in Griffith Park while the efforts to conserve the original facility are underway. Luckily, the remarkable collections can still be appreciated by visitors, simply at a different location—The Autry in Griffith Park. For information of the collections, call the Autry at 323-667-2000.
