Mammoth Mountain is a large lava dome complex lying to the west side of the Mammoth Lakes. It is situated in the Inyo National Forest and is home to a large ski area. Mammoth Mountain was formed in several eruptions which came to an end 57,000 years ago. But, Mammoth still produces hazardous volcanic gases which kill trees and has also caused ski patroller fatalities. Home to the Mammoth Mountain ski area, it is popular when it receives unusually large amount of snow and is used by mountain bikers and hikers. The tourists too frequently come and visit the mountain to see a summit view of Long Valley Caldera.
