Merced, a county of California is located in the area of the San Joaquin Valley in Central California. The city was incorporated in the year 1889 and bears a population of 80,608 as per the 2007 census. The city got its name from the Merced River, flowing nearby the city. Merced is popularly called as the Gateway to Yosemite as it takes less than two hours from Yosemite Park to reach the city by car. Merced has transportation facilities of three bus lines, air service through Merced Municipal Airport and a major rail service via Amtrak. Recently in 2005, the city got the opportunity to house the 10th University of California Campus, University of California, Merced (UCM). Merced covers an area of 19.9 sq. miles wherein the racial makeup of the city comes as 52.40%25 White, 1.28%25 Native American, 6.33%25 African American, 12.37%25 Asian, 28.18%25 other races and 0.21%25 Pacific Islander. The city is famous for having the highest concentration of Laotian Hmong immigrants in the US.
