Nestled within the fast-paced, tourist-ridden downtown area of Palm Springs, California is a museum that transports you to a simpler time in the country’s history—Ruddy’s General Store Museum. Located in the heart of the city on Palm Canyon Drive, Ruddy’s is an instant time warp to the eras of the Great Depression and its lingering effects in the form of an uncanny reproduction of a traditional General Store.

Every endearing element about the museum is authentic, from the display fixtures to the signs, as well as all the products featured, such as groceries, tobacco, clothing, hardware, medicine and beauty and bath products. The “store” boasts an impressive collection of over 6,000 unused items and products, 95%2525 of which are filled with their original contents. With such a vast collection, the store museum truly mimics a corner store ripe for customers.

For older generations, this museum brings them back to the “good ol’ days,” and for visitors born after this time, it presents a world they could only imagine from accounts in history books and family stories. Our country’s cultural evolution is readily apparent at Ruddy’s, where the juxtaposition between the outside Palm Springs world and the inside nostalgia is riveting. The tradition continues with the modest admission price of only 95 cents. For more information, call the museum at 760-327-2156.
