For a walk through history and time travel to California back in the 1800s and the Gold Rush era, visit Sutter’s Fort. Tour past a dozen life-size cannons, covered wagons, a jail and costumed docents bringing the era to life as they portray trades of the time including trapping and blacksmithing. The California State Indian Museum is also part of the Sutter’s Fort Historic Park where photographs of the indigenous people and artifacts are on display from the more than 150 tribes that used to live in California. An interactive section allows visitors to try Indian tools used in making beads, and stone mortars and pestles, used to pulverize food, herbs and acorns. Jewelry, hand-crafted dolls and baskets are for sale in the museum gift store.
