The San Diego Zoo is a non-profit organization which operates the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The zoo is one of the largest and also the most progressive zoos in the world having more than 4,000 animals of over 800 species. Founded in 1916 by Harry M. Wegeforth, it presently has 12 member Board of Trustees.

It is the largest zoological membership association in the world having over 250,000 member households and around 130,000 child memberships.
