Alcatraz is an island in the bay of San Francisco in California.
It is also known as The Rock, a name given by the modern generation.
The island has served different purposes in the past. Initially it was only used as a lighthouse base. Later on it was converted into a military fortification. The fortification then got a new role as a federal prison.
Some of the most dangerous criminals were kept on this island until 1963.
Today tourists visit the island for its national park with its scenic beauty and lush green surroundings.
This natural park is dotted with magnificent species of animals and birds. The green vegetation is the soul of this island.
The island is an ideal place to relax in natural surroundings as well educate oneself about the history of this island.
Visitors can also get a glimpse of the horrifying history of the prison at the museum on this island.
