Fort Point National Historic Site is at the San Francisco Bay in California, USA.
This site is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area. It was constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1861 and was given the status of a National Historic Site in 1970. The Castillo de San Joaquin is a major attraction at the Fort Point National Historic Site. Built by the Spanish in1794, the adobe housed about nine to thirteen cannons and served as a fortress to protect the area from external attacks. The fort was also used by the US Army in the nineteenth century as barracks and storage. Several interesting programmes about the history of Fort Point and also the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge are screened at the fort’s theatre.
Besides its historical significance the Fort Point is also renowned for its architecture and scenic beauty.
