The Castro District is a neighborhood of San Francisco and is situated within Eureka Valley in San Francisco. It is considered as the best known gay neighborhood in the world having transformed from a working class neighborhood through the 1960s and 1970s. This neighborhood was named after Jose Castro who was a leader of Mexican opposition to US rule in California in the 19th century.
