Iglesia de San José construction began in 1523 and the land where this church stands presently was given by Juan Ponce de Leon. It was originally known by the name, the Church and the Monastery of Saint Thomas Aquinas and was built by the Dominican friars. Ponce de Leon was buried here for 300 years until his body was moved in 1913 to the San Juan Cathedral.
