Almaden or originally Almaden Valley is an area in San Jose renowned for its mercury mines. The name originated from the New Almaden Mines, which were named after the mercury mine in Spanish Almaden. The mercury mining is now closed and the main industry of Almaden is now high technology research and development with the likes of IBM Almaden Research Center located in the area.
