San Marcos is situated in the northern part of San Diego County in California. The city, according to the census of 2009, had a total population of around 82,743. As per the United States Census Bureau, San Marcos has a total area of 61.7 square kilometers of which 61.5 square kilometers is water and the remaining is land. The city is home to the Coleman College, the Palomar College as well as the California State University. According to the 2000 census, there were 13,221 families, 18,111 households and 54,977 people residing in the city. The population density of the city was 893.4 per square kilometer. The racial makeup of Sam Marcos was 67.39%25 white, 0.82%25 Native American, 2.00%25 Black, 0.24%25 Pacific Islander, 4.67%25 Asian, 4.48%25 from two or more races and 20.39%25 from other races. The median income for a family in the city was $51,292 and the median income for a household was $45,908. The city is well-known for having some of the most excellent restaurants in North County.
