San Mateo is located in San Mateo County in the San Francisco Bay Area. San Mateo is one of the largest suburban areas located in the San Francisco Peninsula between Burlingame in the northern edge, Foster City in the eastern edge, and Belmont in the southern edge. The city covers a total area of 41.3 square kilometers. It covers 31.6 square kilometers of land and 9.7 square kilometers of water. San Mateo has a modest Mediterranean climate. As per the survey conducted in the year 2000, the population of the region totaled up to 92,482. The density of the population was 2,922.1 people per square kilometer.
