The diverse natural habitat includes riparian zones, the oak woodlands, and the bay land marshes. San Mateo finds its position at 37°33′15′N 122°18′47′W. The city covers a total area of 41.3 square kilometers. It covers 31.6 square kilometers of land and 9.7 square kilometers of water. San Mateo has a modest Mediterranean climate. As per the survey conducted in the year 2000, the population of the region totaled up to 92,482. The density of the population was 2,922.1 people per square kilometer. The racial composition of the city consist of White - 66.23%, Hispanic - 20.52%, Asian - 15.10%, African American - 2.59%, Native American - 0.48%, Pacific Islander - 1.64%, from other races - 8.93%, and 5.03% from more than two races.
