It is one of the earliest units of the State Park System in California. The coastal promontories and bluffs of the scenic park provide unhindered views of the rocky shore and ocean. The park includes the Pa-nu Cultural Preserve, San Simeon Natural Preserve and the Santa Rosa Creek Natural Preserve which were established in 1990. A trail, which is about 3.3 miles, runs through the Washburn Campground and the San Simeon Natural Preserve.
